Overview

This is mostly to be a weekend bolthole when visiting my mum. This is about 200 miles away, and I go every 2 weeks. Like to use 3 seasons, also could be used by my brother, and for short trips with boyfriend Alan.

General principles
  • Cheap
  • Practical and Eco (within reason)
  • Highly insulated
  • Reduced window area versus 'normal' caravans.
  • Improvised/ repurposed/ DIY furniture
  • Few mod cons (no fridge/ oven/ flush toilet)
  • Double bed/ probably not fixed (sofabed or something)
  • Cute
Specific ideas
  • Increase insulation from 20mm to 50mm on walls and ceiling.
  • Remove front panel entirely with 3 windows.
  • Replace said front panel with composite aluminium (usually used for signs), 1 window.
  • Aluminium gutter/ J section used to replace all awning rails.
  • Thicken and reinforce door, install more substantial lock.
  • Repaint all bodywork with specialist coach paint (white, pale blue, mid blue).
  • Double bed split across width of van.
  • Mattress divided into 3 and sewn up to make 2 facing seats. Middle section form backs of facing sofa benches.
  • Cork floor.
  • Use flexi-ply to make reinforced window ledges, also this will be used for the curved front.
  • Mural wallpaper for front - route 66 desert view.
  • Solar panel on roof and 'off-grid' system.
  • 12V dc electrics that most importantly can make tea and coffee! May add inverter to use 240V.
  • LED lighting.
  • DIY composting toilet.
